Andalusian Reservoirs Turned into Green Energy Storage Systems
Researchers at the University of Córdoba have devised a method to convert agricultural reservoirs in Andalusia into large‑scale green batteries. The system, a type of Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), uses simple components – a tube, a rotating disc and the weight of water – to pump air into elevated tanks or compress it, storing surplus solar electricity as potential energy.
By leveraging the height and pressure of water in existing dams, the technology aims to capture excess photovoltaic power that would otherwise be wasted, offering the farming sector a low‑cost, low‑impact solution for energy sovereignty and grid balancing.
