Andean Community and EU strengthen cooperation against organized crime

The Andean Community (CAN) and the European Union have reaffirmed their cooperation to combat transnational organized crime and improve regional mobility. In Lima, officials signed Resolution 2639, which implements the regulations for the Andean Data Bank (BAD). This tool will allow for the real-time online exchange of information regarding criminal records, warrants, and transit impediments among member nations.

Supported by the EU’s Eurofront program, the initiative aims to strengthen Binational Border Care Centers (Cebaf) and facilitate safer, more efficient movement for citizens of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The integration also promotes tourism, allowing citizens of these four nations to travel within the subregion using only their national identity documents.

Tourism remains a vital economic driver for the bloc, contributing approximately 2.5% to the regional GDP and supporting nearly 4 million jobs. The CAN continues to promote the ‘Caminos Andinos’ brand to position the subregion as a unified multi-destination for international travelers.
