Brussels experiences surge in shootings linked to drug trafficking
Brussels has experienced a surge in violent incidents linked to organized crime and drug trafficking, including five separate shooting incidents over a three-day period.
In Anderlecht, a police station was targeted by gunfire from an automatic weapon on a Friday night. While no injuries were reported, the attack was described by Interior Minister Bernard Quintin as an attempt to intimidate authorities. Two masked suspects on an electric scooter fled the scene.
In Saint-Gilles, violence continued through the weekend. A man was shot and wounded in the leg on Saturday evening at Place des Deux Bancs. On Sunday morning, a bullet passed through an apartment window on Rue Fontainas, narrowly missing an occupant. Further shootings occurred in the early hours of Monday, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
Local officials, including Saint-Gilles Mayor Jean Spinette, suggest the violence stems from disputes between drug dealers. The escalation has prompted Interior Minister Quintin to visit the area to assess the security situation and reinforce the government's commitment to fighting organized crime.
