Andhra Pradesh prepares for local body elections amid alliance negotiations and legal petitions

Political activity is intensifying in Andhra Pradesh ahead of the upcoming local body elections. The ruling alliance, consisting of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is currently focused on seat-sharing arrangements and grassroots coordination for the 17 municipal corporations and 106 municipalities involved.

Alliance leaders, including Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, are expected to finalize formulas for mayoral and municipal chairperson posts. The process will be influenced by municipal reservation lists, which include specific allocations for BC, SC, and ST candidates, as well as a requirement for women to occupy half of the chairperson positions.

In contrast, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has filed two petitions in the Andhra Pradesh High Court regarding the election process. The YSRCP is requesting the deployment of central paramilitary forces, 24-hour webcasting, and CCTV surveillance at polling stations to ensure security. Additionally, the party has alleged that officials are delaying the issuance of essential documents, such as caste certificates and No Objection Certificates, required for candidate nominations.
