Andhra Pradesh local body election schedule and violence

Overview

Political activity in Andhra Pradesh has intensified following the official announcement of the local body election schedule by State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha. The election cycle runs from October 14 through December 2, with urban local body polling on October 28 and results expected on October 30. MPTC and ZPTC elections follow on November 3, while Gram Panchayat elections will be conducted in three phases beginning November 26. The Model Code of Conduct is in effect.

Within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), seat-sharing negotiations have been a primary focus. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has advocated for seat allocation based on local party strength rather than fixed percentages. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has called for ‘adequate representation’ for the Jana Sena Party, specifically requesting influence in six Municipal Corporations and 40 Municipalities. While the TDP holds the largest share, internal friction persists regarding these allocations.

Opposition YSRCP continues to challenge the process through the Andhra Pradesh High Court, filing petitions to request central paramilitary forces, 24-hour webcasting, and CCTV surveillance. The party has also alleged that officials are delaying the issuance of essential documents like caste certificates to hinder nominations.

As the nomination process progressed, significant unrest emerged. Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta reported at least 31 incidents of violence, including stone-pelting, arson, and the destruction of nomination papers. Recent reports confirmed an attack on a police vehicle involving gunfire, resulting in a serious injury to a constable. For the MPTC and ZPTC contests, the State Election Commission confirmed 50,815 valid nominations, with the TDP and YSRCP fielding the largest numbers of candidates.
