A 21-year-old man, identified as Hemanth (also known as Dummu), was shot and injured by police in the Atmakur forest area of Anantapur district while allegedly attempting to evade arrest. The incident occurred on Sunday after police received a tip-off regarding his whereabouts. Authorities reported that Hemanth allegedly attacked the police team with stones when they attempted to take him into custody, prompting officers to fire approximately six rounds.

The arrest follows a violent attack on October 31 at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu. During a mathematics class, Hemanth allegedly entered the classroom with a mechanized chainsaw and attacked a 15-year-old Class 10 student. The victim sustained critical injuries to her head, neck, back, and abdomen, and her right hand was nearly severed. A second student, identified as Lakshmi, was also injured while attempting to intervene and protect her classmate.

Preliminary investigations suggest the motive may be linked to the accused allegedly harassing the victim and attacking her after she rejected his romantic proposals. The suspect is reportedly a distant relative of the victim. The critically injured student was transferred to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for advanced surgical treatment, where her condition remains serious. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Education Minister Nara Lokesh have both monitored the situation, with the government pledging full support for the victim's medical care.
