Andhra Pradesh school chainsaw attack

Overview

On October 31, a 21-year-old man identified as Hemanth allegedly entered a Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu, Anantapur district, with a mechanized chainsaw. During a mathematics class, he allegedly attacked a 15-year-old student, causing critical injuries to her head, neck, back, and abdomen, and nearly severing her right hand. A second student was also injured while attempting to intervene.

Preliminary investigations suggest the motive was linked to the suspect allegedly harassing the victim after she rejected his romantic proposals. The victim was transferred to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for advanced surgical treatment.

Following a manhunt, police located the suspect in the Atmakur forest area. Authorities reported that Hemanth allegedly resisted arrest and attacked officers with stones or a knife, prompting police to fire approximately six rounds. The suspect sustained multiple bullet injuries and was taken to the Government General Hospital in Anantapur for treatment.
