Andrea Kimi Antonelli extends F1 championship lead after Hungarian Grand Prix

Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished third at the Hungarian Grand Prix, widening his drivers’ championship lead to 219 points – 50 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 59 points ahead of teammate George Russell. He started seventh after a grid‑penalty for failing to slow for a yellow flag and used a flexible pit‑stop strategy to recover to the podium.

Lando Norris won the race, marking McLaren’s first victory of the season, while Lewis Hamilton dropped to fifth after receiving a five‑second pit‑lane speed penalty. Mercedes retained the constructors’ lead with 379 points, but the team’s performance was described as “not easy” by team principal Toto Wolff, who added that “it is too early to label Antonelli the title favourite.”

The event concluded the first half of the 2026 season, after which a summer break begins. The championship will resume at the Dutch Grand Prix in August.
