Antonelli wins Italian Grand Prix; Russell eyes race focus
Overview
Kimi Antonelli secured a historic victory at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, marking the first time an Italian driver has won at the circuit since 1966. Despite starting 19th due to power unit component penalties, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver executed a massive recovery drive, overtaking teammate George Russell with three laps remaining to claim his seventh win of the season.
The race was interrupted by a red flag on the third or fourth lap after Charles Leclerc crashed his Ferrari into the barriers at the Parabolica. Following the restart, George Russell led for much of the race, but Antonelli managed to overtake him in the final laps. Strategic shifts during a Virtual Safety Car period allowed Antonelli to pit for medium tyres, facilitating his late-race charge. Max Verstappen finished in third place.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Antonelli’s methodical driving and rapid development, comparing his learning ability to an “advanced artificial intelligence.” The victory also marked Mercedes’ 250th Grand Prix win as a power unit manufacturer and resulted in a Mercedes 1-2 finish.
In the wake of the race, the championship standings show Antonelli leading with 267 points, while Russell sits in second with 201 points. Following the 66-point gap established at Monza, Russell indicated that his chances of winning the World Championship are diminishing, stating he is no longer focusing on a championship comeback but will instead focus on individual races. Antonelli expressed a preference for focusing on each race individually rather than dwelling on the standings.
