Andreas Scheuer faces trial over German car toll testimony

The trial of former German Federal Minister Andreas Scheuer has commenced at the Berlin District Court. Scheuer and former State Secretary Gerhard Schulz face charges of providing false testimony before a parliamentary inquiry committee regarding the failed car toll project.

The prosecution alleges that during a meeting in November 2018, operators offered to delay signing toll contracts until after a ruling by the European Court of Justice. The indictment claims Scheuer and Schulz intentionally testified that they could not remember such an offer, contradicting reports from company managers who claim the proposal was made during a breakfast meeting.

The car toll project was declared unlawful by the European Court of Justice in June 2019 because it discriminated against foreign drivers. This ruling led to the German state committing 243 million euros in damages to the companies Kapsch and Eventim. Scheuer and his legal counsel deny the allegations of lying.
