Andrew Garfield film faces marketing identity crisis

The upcoming historical drama directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Andrew Garfield is facing a marketing identity crisis. Originally titled ‘The Uprising’, the film was intended to be a gritty, realistic portrayal of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt against King Richard II.

However, the American studio Focus Features has recently added the subtitle ‘The Rise of Robin Hood’ to the project, claiming the historical rebellion inspired the Robin Hood legend. This last-minute rebranding has caused significant confusion within the industry. The move is viewed as a strategic attempt to increase commercial appeal, despite the risk of associating the film with previous underperforming Robin Hood adaptations.

The discrepancy has led to conflicting promotional strategies across different regions. In response to the confusion, the British distributor, Entertainment Film Distributors, issued an official denial stating that the Robin Hood marketing elements are not approved for the United Kingdom market.
