Garfield stated he hopes the story is ‘galvanizing’ and that viewers feel their own struggles reflected in the historical characters. He specifically remarked, ‘I hope that if any billionaires watch it, they’re scared s***less,’ adding that he believes the ultra-wealthy might be the ones who are ‘most soul sick’ and in need of healing.

While the comments received enthusiastic support from the live audience at the AMC The Grove, they drew mixed reactions online. Some social media users criticized the remarks as virtue signaling, noting the contradiction of a multi-millionaire commenting on wealth inequality. Garfield also noted that he has been ‘three weeks sober from social media,’ which explains why he was unaware of the initial online backlash regarding his previous comments.
