Andrew Garfield film ‘The Uprising’ rebranding sparks Robin Hood confusion

Marketing for Paul Greengrass’s upcoming film, ‘The Uprising,’ has caused significant confusion following a sudden rebranding that suggests a connection to the legend of Robin Hood. Originally promoted as a historical drama centered on the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt in England, new promotional materials and taglines, such as “Witness the Rise of Robin Hood,” have emerged just weeks before its scheduled September 11 release.

While some promotional assets and updated synopses suggest the film serves as an origin story for the legendary outlaw, the character played by Andrew Garfield was previously credited only as “The Ploughman.” This shift has led to conflicting messages between distributors. The UK distributor, Entertainment Film Distributors, issued a statement denying the film is a Robin Hood story, clarifying that it is a historical epic about the Peasants’ Revolt and that their local marketing will not reference the legend.

The film features a large ensemble cast, including Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, and Thomasin McKenzie. The sudden change in marketing direction has sparked debate among fans regarding whether the film is a strictly historical account of the revolt or a fictionalized tale of the folk hero.
