Andrey Lukanov assassination remains unsolved in Bulgaria
On October 2, 1996, Andrey Lukanov, a prominent figure of the Bulgarian transition and former Prime Minister, was assassinated in Sofia. The attack occurred around 9:15–9:20 a.m. near his residence on Latinka Street. Lukanov was shot four times with a Makarov pistol by an assailant disguised as a beggar or skier.
Despite extensive investigations by the Ministry of Interior and the prosecutor's office, the true mastermind and perpetrator have never been identified. The case has become one of the most significant unsolved crimes in modern Bulgarian history.
Legal proceedings saw several individuals arrested in 1999, including businessman Angel Vasilev and Ukrainian citizens Aleksandr Rusov and Aleksey Kichatov. While the Sofia City Court initially issued life sentences in 2003, these were overturned by the Sofia Appellate Court in 2006 due to insufficient evidence and allegations of physical pressure during detention. The Supreme Court of Cassation eventually acquitted all defendants, leaving the case officially unresolved.
