Andrey Lukanov assassination

Overview

On October 2, 1996, former Bulgarian Prime Minister Andrey Lukanov was assassinated in Sofia. An assailant disguised as a beggar or skier shot Lukanov four times with a Makarov pistol near his residence.

Investigations into the murder linked the weapon to the killing of Ukrainian criminal Sergey Shanin. This led to the detention of Ukrainian citizen Alexey Kichatov, who implicated Georgi Georgiev and businessman Angel Vasilev. Prosecutors alleged that Vasilev, a member of the Orion economic circle, ordered the hit because Lukanov threatened the group’s business interests. Other individuals, including Alexander Rusov, were identified as potential accomplices or the physical perpetrator.

Despite legal proceedings and several arrests, the case remains officially unresolved. While the Sofia City Court initially issued life sentences in 2003, these were overturned by the Sofia Appellate Court in 2006 due to insufficient evidence and allegations of pressure during detention. The Supreme Court of Cassation eventually acquitted the defendants, leaving the true mastermind and perpetrator unidentified.
