Montenegro political leaders clash over parliamentary leadership and EU path
Political tensions are rising in Montenegro as lawmakers debate the leadership of Parliament Speaker Andrija Mandić and the country's path toward European Union membership.
Opposition MP Nikola Janović has called for urgent cooperation between the government and opposition to ensure Montenegro's European integration is not stalled, criticizing the ruling majority for failing to uphold previous agreements. Meanwhile, Branislav Nenezić of the European Alliance suggested that Mandić is losing control over the parliamentary majority and should resign.
Mandić defended his record, stating that the parliamentary majority has passed approximately 500 laws aligned with European standards. He also addressed criticism regarding his condolences to the son of Ratko Mladić, arguing that his actions followed local traditions of respect for the deceased and were not intended to undermine European values. The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) countered by calling for Mandić's resignation, alleging his recent parliamentary speeches were an attempt to deflect from his political history and the internal instability within the majority.
