Android 17 introduces per-application memory limits

Google has released Android 17, internally codenamed ‘Cinnamon Bun’, featuring a significant shift toward software-based resource management. A primary focus of this update is the implementation of per-application memory limits designed to improve system stability and prevent performance degradation.

To combat memory leaks and abnormal software behavior, the system will impose RAM thresholds tailored to the specific hardware of the device. For instance, a phone with 4 GB of RAM will operate under different constraints than one with 16 GB. When an application exceeds its limit, Android will first attempt to compress data using zRAM. If the issue persists, the system may slow the application down or, as a last resort, terminate it to protect the overall stability of the device.

The rollout of Android 17 has followed an accelerated timeline, with stable versions becoming available for Google Pixel devices in mid-June. Other manufacturers are currently adjusting their custom interfaces to accommodate the new system, which also introduces increased interface transparency and enhanced AI integration for daily device management.
