Android Auto expands video playback via YouTube and third-party apps

Android Auto is expanding its video capabilities, both through official integration and third-party applications. Google has begun rolling out native support for YouTube, allowing users to stream video directly on vehicle infotainment displays. To ensure road safety, video playback is strictly limited to when the vehicle is parked; once the car begins moving, the images disappear, leaving only audio available for YouTube Premium subscribers.

In parallel, independent developers are providing alternative solutions for users seeking more flexibility. New projects like Lumora, an open-source multimedia player, and a rewritten version of Fermata Xtream allow for IPTV and Jellyfin integration. These tools enable drivers to access various channels, movies, and series on their car screens during stops, such as while charging electric vehicles. Like the official YouTube integration, these third-party apps are designed to stop video playback automatically when the vehicle is in motion.
