Android My Number Card service launches in Japan
The My Number Card service for Android smartphones officially commenced on October 20, 2026. This update expands upon previous electronic certificate functions by adding attribute certification capabilities. Users can now utilize Google Wallet to perform identity, age, and address verification.
However, full functionality is limited to specific devices that meet high security standards. The new attribute certification requires a hardware-based security feature known as ‘StrongBox,’ which complies with the international ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard for mobile driver's licenses.
While high-end models from Samsung, Sharp, and Sony are largely compatible, many mid-range and budget devices lack the necessary security chips. Notably, Google Pixel devices, including the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, remain compatible despite reaching their update expiration dates, due to their existing hardware security architecture.
