Japan My Number Card Android integration
Overview
Japan’s Digital Agency is expanding My Number Card functionality to Android devices. Following the June 2025 launch for iPhone, the agency announced that starting October 20, 2026, users will be able to add their digital ID to Google Wallet on compatible Android smartphones.
This update introduces an “attribute certification function,” allowing users to perform identity, age, and address verification at participating stores and services. This feature enables the verification of specific details such as name, address, date of birth, gender, and photo for tasks like opening bank accounts, accessing municipal services, or age verification at restaurants. Service providers can facilitate this through the agency’s face-to-face verification app.
While many devices support existing electronic certificate functions, full support for the new attribute certification requires newer models that meet high security standards. Specifically, the feature requires a hardware-based security feature known as ‘StrongBox,’ which complies with the international ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard for mobile driver's licenses.
Compatible models include recent series from Pixel (6 and later), AQUOS (R9 pro, sense10 and later), Xperia (1 VI and later), and Galaxy (S24 and later). Notably, Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro remain compatible due to their existing hardware security architecture despite reaching update expiration dates. Many mid-range and budget devices lack the necessary security chips. Users must ensure devices are running Android 12 or higher with the latest security patches.
