Andros Shipwreck Yields Hundreds of Classical Greek Amphorae

Archaeologists have uncovered a well‑preserved classical‑period shipwreck off the island of Andros in the Aegean Sea, at a depth of about 39‑44 metres. The wreck, dated to the late 5th or early 4th century BC, was located after a private individual alerted the Greek Ministry of Culture, prompting a dive by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities.

The cargo includes an estimated 600‑650 amphorae of several types—Mendis, Peparithos and Solokha 2—along with fragments of a lead‑coated anchor and assorted stones. Analyses of the amphorae are expected to shed new light on ancient maritime trade networks and the economic relationships of the classical Greek world.
