András Baka assumes office as President of Hungary

András Baka, the former President of the Supreme Court, officially assumed the office of President of the Republic of Hungary on August 19. Baka, nominated by the Tisza Party, was elected by the Parliament on August 11 with 140 votes in favor and 6 against. The Fidesz and KDNP parties boycotted the vote.

The presidential transition follows the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law, which terminated the mandate of the previous president, Tamás Sulyok, on July 20. This constitutional change was driven by the Tisza Party's parliamentary majority following the April 12 elections. During the interim period, Ágnes Forsthoffer, Speaker of the National Assembly, performed the presidential duties.

Fidesz and KDNP challenged the legality of the removal of Tamás Sulyok, but the Constitutional Court rejected their motions, stating it did not have the jurisdiction to review the content of the constitutional amendment. Baka's term is set to last until the new constitution takes effect, with a maximum duration of five years.
