Hungary Tisza Party vs Fidesz rivalry
Entities: Magyar Péter · Tisza Party · Judit Polgár · Polgár Judit · Mi Hazánk
Overview
A July 1, 2024 poll showed the newly formed Tisza Party far outpacing the ruling Fidesz‑KDNP coalition, with roughly 60 % of the population indicating support for Tisza versus 18 % for Fidesz. Analysts warned that the surge could destabilise the right‑wing bloc and noted the absence of a clear internal challenger for Fidesz. By June 2026, an IDEA Institute survey of Hungarian football fans indicated that 51 % supported the Tisza Party while 28 % backed Fidesz‑KDNP, confirming a broader shift toward the opposition. Among Ferencváros supporters, however, Fidesz retained a lead (42 % vs 28 %). A follow‑up IDEA Institute poll released on 24 July 2026 reaffirmed these figures, showing the same overall advantage for Tisza among fans and persistent loyalty to Fidesz within the Ferencváros base. A Medián poll conducted 22‑24 July 2026 recorded a modest decline in Tisza’s adult‑population backing, slipping to about 57 % from roughly 61 % in June, while Fidesz edged up to around 19‑23 % across population, eligible and "sure" voter groups. Despite the dip, Tisza still commanded a majority among "sure" voters, exceeding two‑thirds. The poll also highlighted widespread awareness of an upcoming presidential election and the nomination of Prime Minister Judit Polgár, though many criticised the rushed communication surrounding the process. A follow‑up Medián poll released 26 July 2026 confirmed the slide, with Tisza support settling at 57 % of the adult population and 68 % among "sure" voters, while Fidesz held about 19 % overall and 23 % of the sure‑voter segment. Voters criticised the hurried nomination of Justice Minister Judit Polgár as presidential candidate, with only 22 % deeming the government’s swift action appropriate. Awareness of the election was high (97 % had heard of it, 94 % knew Polgár’s candidacy).
