András Baka nominated by Tisza party for Hungarian presidency
The Tisza party, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has officially nominated András Baka, a former president of the Hungarian Supreme Court, for the position of President of the Republic. The nomination follows the early termination of the mandate of the previous president, Tamás Sulyok, following a constitutional amendment. Baka, a 73-year-old jurist who served as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights from 1991 to 2008, was selected from a shortlist of three candidates.
The Hungarian Parliament is scheduled to hold a secret ballot to elect the new head of state on Tuesday. Given that the Tisza party holds a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, Baka's election is widely considered a formality. The nomination has drawn criticism from the Fidesz and KDNP parties, who refuse to participate in the election, labeling the removal of the previous president as illegitimate.
Additionally, the Mi Hazánk party submitted a nomination for energy lawyer Máté Tóth, though it failed to provide the required 40 signatures, submitting only six. Baka's candidacy is framed by the Tisza party as a move to restore the dignity of the presidency and ensure judicial independence and the rule of law in Hungary.
