András Kármán announces MNB reforms and motorway savings

Hungarian Finance Minister András Kármán has announced plans for systemic reforms following a scandal involving the foundations of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB). Kármán described the situation as the “largest bank robbery in Hungarian history,” alleging that former leadership worked to convert national assets into private wealth while supervisory board members received multi-million monthly fees despite inaction. In response, the Minister has delegated new members to the MNB supervisory board and intends to introduce legislation to reduce board compensation and establish new oversight mechanisms.

Additionally, Kármán claimed the government saved approximately 100 billion forints regarding the management of a section of the M6 motorway. He alleged that the previous administration, specifically citing János Lázár, rejected a 50 billion forint proposal from existing operators and the state road manager in favor of a 150 billion forint agreement with MKIF Zrt. The current administration is reviewing alternatives to ensure more cost-effective management of the highway infrastructure.
