Hungarian fiscal oversight and institutional reforms

Hungarian Finance Minister András Kármán has initiated a series of fiscal tightening measures and systemic reforms aimed at managing the national budget and public assets.

Initially, the Ministry implemented strict oversight on government spending to address a budget deficit that had exceeded legal limits. This included rejecting 18 major commitments totaling 62.5 billion forints across sectors such as healthcare, water management, and disaster management. Despite these cuts, the Minister reported a 524 billion forint surplus for July, which helped reduce the seven-month deficit.

Following these spending restrictions, the focus shifted toward addressing alleged financial mismanagement within state institutions. Kármán announced reforms for the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) after describing a scandal involving the conversion of national assets into private wealth as the “largest bank robbery in Hungarian history.” Proposed responses include introducing legislation to reduce supervisory board compensation and establishing new oversight mechanisms. Additionally, the administration is reviewing infrastructure management, claiming to have saved approximately 100 billion forints regarding the M6 motorway by reviewing previous contract agreements.
