Andy Burnham Secures Labour Backing to Become UK Prime Minister
Former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, now MP for Makerfield, has secured the backing of 349 of the 403 Labour MPs after receiving 27 additional nominations on 13 July. This exceeds the 81‑MP threshold needed to trigger a leadership challenge, making his election as Labour leader on 17 July mathematically certain and clearing the way for him to become Prime Minister.
Under the constitutional process, outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer will formally resign to King Charles III, who will then invite Burnham to form a new government. Burnham is expected to take the party leadership on Friday, 17 July, and be sworn in as Prime Minister on Monday, 20 July. He has pledged not to call an immediate general election and emphasizes regional devolution and council house‑building in his upcoming policy agenda.
