Andy Burnham plans to shift parts of government to Manchester as UK local council overhaul proceeds
Incoming Labour leader Andy Burnham, set to become prime minister, has signalled his intention to relocate elements of the 10 Downing Street operation to Manchester. In his book *Head North* he writes, "We must complete the process of devolving power out of Westminster to all parts of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland," framing the move as part of a broader devolution agenda.
At the same time, the government’s Local Government Reorganisation programme proposes reducing Nottinghamshire’s nine authorities to two, with several options for expanding Nottingham city’s boundaries into neighbouring districts. Critics, including Broxtowe Alliance councillors, have called the plan an "absolute mess" and warned it could be a "disaster waiting to happen." The change of prime minister has sparked calls for a reassessment of the proposals before a decision is confirmed this summer.
