UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announces £442m plan to end rough sleeping
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a £442 million initiative aimed at ending rough sleeping in England by Christmas. The plan involves providing emergency accommodation and intensive wraparound support, including psychiatric, drug, and alcohol services, to help individuals rebuild their lives.
The funding package includes £102 million in new allocations on top of the £340 million previously announced in July. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government will fund the programme, which also intends to deliver more than 1,000 permanent homes over the next three years. To support the rollout, the government will host a national summit on tackling rough sleeping this autumn.
While the plan has been welcomed by various charities, it has faced criticism from Conservative shadow housing secretary Sir James Cleverley, who questioned the lack of specific details regarding financing and implementation. Additionally, some homelessness charities expressed concerns regarding the safety and appropriateness of using hotel accommodations for vulnerable individuals.
