Andy Burnham pledges greater support for rugby league as UK Labour leadership race heats up
Andy Burnham, former Greater Manchester mayor and ex‑president of the Rugby Football League, is emerging as the leading Labour contender to replace Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Burnham has vowed to boost rugby league in Britain, calling for increased investment in grassroots facilities and greater recognition for the women's and girls' game.
Speaking at the Super League Magic Weekend, Burnham highlighted his personal ties to the Leigh Leopards and Wigan Warriors, and noted his shared passion for the sport with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, a fan of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He also suggested that football fans should be allowed to drink alcohol in their seats, mirroring rugby league practices.
Burnham’s leadership bid follows Starmer’s announced resignation on June 22, with nominations opening on July 9 and closing on July 16. If successful, he would become the United Kingdom’s next prime minister, bringing a sports‑focused perspective to his political platform.
