Andy Burnham Poised to Lead UK Labour Party After Starmer Resignation

Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Labour leader on 22 June 2026, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Brexit referendum. The announcement set in motion a rapid leadership contest, with nominations expected to open on 9 July and close on 16 July, and a new leader to be chosen by September.

Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester and a former Labour leadership contender in 2010 and 2015, emerged as the clear front‑runner. Backed by senior party figures such as Wes Streeting, Burnham’s familiarity and perceived ability to address the lingering Brexit‑related split, economic challenges, and overstretched public services have positioned him as the likely successor to Starmer.
