Andy Burnham proposes Northern-led economic growth mission
Andy Burnham has proposed a new economic strategy centered in Manchester, suggesting that the UK Treasury may not be the most effective department to lead a dedicated growth mission. Burnham intends to establish a “No. 10 in the North” to oversee prosperity and economic development.
This approach draws parallels to the 1960s Labour government under Harold Wilson, which created the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) to separate growth objectives from the Treasury's focus on public finance control. Proponents of this model argue that the specific qualities required to manage public spending differ from those needed to drive an economy through technological and social change.
