Andy Burnham Set to Lead Labour Party as Rival Darren Jones Steps Aside
Darren Jones, the former chief of staff to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, told Sky News he will not stand in the Labour Party leadership contest, removing the most immediate obstacle to Andy Burnham’s expected coronation as party leader and future prime minister. Burnham is already preparing his first major policy speech and outlining his prospective cabinet, with speculation over appointments such as former Labour minister Ed Miliband for finance.
Former defence secretary Al Carns has been mentioned as a possible challenger, but he says he remains undecided and wants to see Burnham’s political vision before committing. The leadership race is set to open on 9 July, and if no other candidate files, Burnham could assume the leadership on 17 July.
