Andy Burnham shifts economic growth mandate to No 10 North

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced that the new No 10 North office in Manchester will assume responsibility for driving economic growth, shifting this mandate away from the Treasury. This move is intended to divest power from Whitehall and unlock systemic blockages within the government.

Under this new structure, the Treasury will focus on overseeing public finances, while the Manchester-based outpost at Heron House will lead the mission for economic expansion. Chancellor John Healey reportedly supports the decision, which Burnham described as a “huge transfer of power.” The Prime Minister plans to work from the Manchester office once a week, and officials state the new arrangement will not incur extra costs for taxpayers.

Reflecting on his early premiership, Burnham acknowledged a “bumpy” start, specifically citing controversies regarding the early release of prisoners. He noted that Justice Secretary Alex Norris is expected to present a revised solution regarding this issue on September 1.
