Andy Burnham officially became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 20 July 2026, succeeding Keir Starmer. The new Labour leader took office at Downing Street amid a challenging economic backdrop and heightened public scepticism.

A portrait of Burnham was photographed by Romanian photographer Alecsandra Drăgoi, who has been based in London for years. The image, taken on 22 July 2026, is now part of the government’s official archive and will appear in Cabinet communications and international press releases.

At the same time, the Conservative opposition announced a controversial plan to restrict social‑housing allocation to non‑European Union nationals. The proposal would bar new allocations to foreign tenants and allow existing leases to be terminated, affecting an estimated 228 000 households. Conservative housing minister Sir James Cleverly argued the move would prioritise British families on the waiting list.
