Andy Burnham vows no early election and pledges to follow Labour’s 2024 manifesto

Andy Burnham, the sole candidate to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as UK prime minister, told users on a Reddit AMA that he will not call a general election if he takes office, insisting he will work to the Labour Party’s 2024 manifesto. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the state‑pension triple lock, saying the policy must remain despite debate over its cost. Burnham also said he will push for electoral‑system reform, urging Labour to include a move to proportional representation in its next manifesto. His devolution agenda – described as the "biggest rebalancing of power" – aims to give mayors greater control over services such as water, energy and transport, and includes plans for a “No 10 North” hub. On foreign policy, he pledged to continue the UK’s 100 percent support for Ukraine and to pursue closer ties with the EU. The statements come as Burnham prepares to become prime minister in July, with the next general election not due until 2029.
