Andy Green attempts land speed record in hydrogen-powered car

British driver Andy Green, the only person to have broken the sound barrier in a car, is attempting a new land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Green aims to surpass his own diesel-powered record of 350.092 mph, which he set twenty years ago.

This attempt features the JCB Hydromax, a 32-foot hydrogen-powered vehicle developed by British manufacturer JCB. The car utilizes two hydrogen internal combustion engines producing a combined 1,600 horsepower. Beyond breaking the diesel record, Green intends to set new world records for hydrogen internal combustion engines and electric vehicles.

Green, a retired Royal Air Force fighter pilot, stated that the project serves to demonstrate hydrogen as a clean-energy alternative. During practice runs, the vehicle reached a top speed of 368.347 mph. The official attempt will be conducted under the supervision of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
