Andy Nguyen abandons PS5 Linux project after Sony patches exploit
Lead developer Andy Nguyen, known in the security community as TheFlow, has announced he is abandoning the PS5 Linux project and stepping away from the PlayStation hacking scene. The decision follows Sony patching a critical hypervisor exploit that was essential for the project's continued development and future support for the PS5 Pro.
Nguyen reported that the vulnerability was discovered by individuals using Large Language Models (LLMs) to find flaws. He expressed frustration that the exploit was reported to Sony via HackerOne shortly after he had requested that the discoverers delay reporting it until after the release of 'GTA 6' to allow users to enjoy the game legally on Linux.
The project had successfully demonstrated the ability to run modern AAA titles, such as 'Black Myth: Wukong' and 'Control', via Proton on the console. While the existing GitHub repositories remain available for other contributors, Nguyen's planned work for the PS5 Pro, intended for a 2027 release, will not be completed.
