Evolution of PS5 software compatibility and emulation
Overview
Open-source efforts to achieve PlayStation 5 software compatibility on PC, Linux, and mobile continue to advance through several distinct methodologies. The AnyPS5 project, which functions as a compatibility translation layer, has reached significant milestones, including achieving approximately 96% to 100% coverage of the console’s GPU shader instructions. This enables the translation of graphics workloads to PC hardware via the Vulkan API. While technical progress is notable, the project still faces hurdles with system libraries, which sit at approximately 84% coverage.
Parallel to this, the emulator SharpEmu has successfully run several titles at 60 FPS, and KytyPS5 has demonstrated the ability to run ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ at 40 to 60 FPS on high-end hardware. New experimental emulators, CapyPS5 and KytyPS5, have also emerged on the Android ecosystem. Using FEX x86-64 technology to adapt software for ARM processors, CapyPS5 has achieved 60 FPS on certain titles like ‘Dead Cells’ and ‘Blasphemous’ on handheld hardware, though more demanding 3D titles show significantly lower performance.
However, the scene has faced setbacks. Lead developer Andy Nguyen, known as ‘TheFlow’, abandoned the PS5 Linux project after Sony patched a critical hypervisor exploit. Nguyen expressed frustration that the vulnerability was reported via HackerOne by researchers using Large Language Models (LLMs) before he could implement a plan to protect user access to the PlayStation Store. While the project continues under open-source licenses, Nguyen’s planned work for the PS5 Pro will not be completed. Users are also cautioned to avoid unofficial repositories that may contain malware.
