Andy Nguyen quits PS5 Linux project after hypervisor exploit dispute
Lead developer Andy Nguyen, known as TheFlow, has announced his departure from the PlayStation 5 Linux project. The decision follows a dispute regarding a hypervisor vulnerability that was reported to Sony earlier than Nguyen had intended.
Nguyen had been working to expand Linux compatibility to newer hardware, including the PS5 Pro, with a goal of a full public release by 2027. He had planned to delay reporting the hypervisor exploit to Sony to ensure users could maintain access to the PlayStation Store until the release of GTA 6. However, another researcher, Jordy, reported the same vulnerability to Sony via HackerOne, using tools involving artificial intelligence.
Nguyen criticized the move and expressed frustration with a perceived decline in the hacking community, labeling those involved as developers who use large language models to generate code without a fundamental understanding of the technology. While the lead developer has stepped down, the project continues under open-source GPL 3.0 licenses, with existing support for various firmware versions and the PS5 Slim, though the PS5 Pro remains unsupported.
