Universidad de Chile advances in Copa Chile amid scheduling controversy
Universidad de Chile advanced to the Copa Chile quarterfinals after defeating Everton with a 2-1 aggregate score. The series was marked by unprecedented scheduling and controversy following a suspension of the first leg in Viña del Mar due to pyrotechnics.
On Sunday, the remaining minutes of the first match were played behind closed doors at the Estadio Nacional before the second leg commenced hours later. Universidad de Chile maintained their 1-0 lead from the initial period and secured the win with a 1-1 draw in the second match, featuring goals from Juan Martín Lucero and Eduardo Vargas. Everton's Nicolás Montiel scored the equalizer in the second leg.
The unusual decision by the Chilean Football Federation (FFCh) to complete the suspended minutes on the same day as the return leg drew sharp criticism. Everton defender Diego Oyarzún labeled the governing bodies, including the ANFP, as ‘inoperant and inefficient,’ calling the day ‘shameful for national football.’ Azul Azul director José Miguel Insulza also questioned the decision, noting that such a format was unprecedented.
Universidad de Chile will now face Deportes Antofagasta in the quarterfinals. Other advancing teams in the tournament include Colo Colo, Unión La Calera, and Deportes Puerto Montt.
