South American football developments

Overview

Developments in South American football include results from the Copa Libertadores round of 16, where Platense and Coquimbo Unido drew 1-1. In Chile, the transfer market has concluded with Universidad de Chile signing Igor Lichnovsky and Colo-Colo considering venue changes due to pitch conditions. In the Chilean Primera División, Colo Colo remains the league leader with 53 points, maintaining a 14-point lead over Universidad Católica and Universidad de Chile.

Universidad de Chile recently advanced to the Copa Chile quarterfinals after defeating Everton with a 2-1 aggregate score. The series was marked by significant controversy following the suspension of the first leg at Estadio Sausalito in the 82nd minute after a flare landed near Everton player Maximiliano Guerrero. While initial reports suggested the pyrotechnics came from home fans, video footage indicated the flare originated from the Universidad de Chile supporters' section. The Chilean Football Federation (FFCh) decided to play the remaining seven minutes of the suspended match behind closed doors at the Estadio Nacional before commencing the second leg on the same day. This scheduling drew sharp criticism from officials, with Everton captain Diego Oyarzún calling the situation ‘vergonzoso para el fútbol nacional’ (shameful for national football).

A disciplinary tribunal is currently reviewing the suspension. Referee Piero Maza submitted a report stating that pyrotechnics were used by both sets of fans, noting fireworks were launched from the Everton supporters' section during the pre-match ceremony. A flare from the Universidad de Chile section narrowly missed player Maximiliano Guerrero and assistant referee Alán Sandoval. Both clubs face potential sanctions, including matches played without spectators and fines of up to 500 UTM. Additionally, players involved in offensive conduct could face suspensions of one to ten matches.
