Angèle Etoundi Essamba showcases photography at AKAA fair

Cameroonian photographer Angèle Etoundi Essamba is featuring her work at the AKAA contemporary African art fair in Paris. Her work, which spans four decades, focuses on challenging dominant visual representations of Black women.

Essamba, who has lived and worked in the Netherlands since her youth, seeks to move beyond stereotypical, sexualized, or subaltern depictions of Black subjects. Her portraits emphasize individuality, strength, and vulnerability, allowing her models to occupy space on their own terms rather than through a Western lens.

One of her notable pieces, ‘Girl with an Amber Earring 1’, which draws inspiration from Johannes Vermeer, serves as a centerpiece for the exhibition, illustrating her method of recontextualizing European painting references within her own artistic language.
