African contemporary art exhibitions
Overview
In October 2026, several major exhibitions and fairs focused on African contemporary art were announced and held. In Kinshasa, visual artist Aïcha Muteba scheduled a solo exhibition titled ‘Rencontre’ at the Memling Hotel, which utilizes recycled waste to explore themes of cultural diversity and environmental preservation.
Simultaneously, the eleventh edition of the AKAA (Also Known As Africa) fair took place in Paris at the Carreau du Temple. The event introduced a new ‘AKAA PHOTO’ section to highlight African photographic practices. Among the participants was Cameroonian photographer Angèle Etoundi Essamba, who showcased work spanning four decades aimed at challenging stereotypical visual representations of Black women through portraits that emphasize individuality and strength.
