Angola activates contingency plan to combat Mpox outbreak

Angola has activated its National Contingency Plan to control an Mpox outbreak. Health authorities have mobilized 50,000 vaccine doses, which will be prioritized for healthcare workers and individuals who have been in contact with infected persons.

Reports indicate that the country has recorded 593 confirmed cases and two deaths since November 2024. Recent data shows the virus is circulating in several provinces, including Cabinda, Moxico Leste, Lunda-Sul, and Moxico. Health officials noted that the most affected demographic is females between the ages of 20 and 24.

To manage the surge, the government is focusing on strengthening epidemiological surveillance, early detection, and the capacity of sanitary units. Secretary of State for Public Health, Carlos de Sousa, stated that the response includes investing in professional training, simulation exercises, and improving information systems to ensure rapid intervention.
