Global and regional mpox response efforts

Overview

In late August 2026, a global mpox vaccine stockpile was launched to improve outbreak response and ensure equitable access to doses. Financed by Gavi and coordinated through the International Coordinating Group, the initiative aims to prevent shortages, particularly in the African region which accounts for approximately two-thirds of reported cases.

Following these global efforts, Angola activated its National Contingency Plan to combat a domestic outbreak. Having recorded 593 confirmed cases and two deaths since November 2024, the country has mobilized 50,000 vaccine doses for healthcare workers and close contacts. The Angolan government is focusing on strengthening epidemiological surveillance and sanitary unit capacity to manage the virus, which has been circulating in several provinces.
