Portugal set to receive $40 billion U.S. tech investment by 2031
U.S. Ambassador to Portugal John Arrigo announced that more than $40 billion in U.S. technology investment is expected in Portugal by 2031, creating the continent's largest concentration of American AI infrastructure. The investment will be anchored by the new Google Nuvem transatlantic cable, which was ceremonially connected in Lisbon, and by a growing data‑centre capacity of over 2.6 GW, including the 1.2‑GW Start Campus project in Sines backed by U.S. firm Davidson Kempner. The United States is already Portugal’s third‑largest foreign investor, with nearly $20 billion in investment stock across AI, energy, agriculture and tourism. Arrigo urged European nations to partner with trusted U.S. allies to build their digital future, warning that going it alone could leave them behind.
