Angola invests $2.5bn in Luanda water infrastructure

The Angolan government is investing over $2.5 billion into two major water infrastructure projects, BITA and Quilonga Grande, to improve potable water access for the population of Luanda and surrounding provinces.

The Quilonga Grande project, located in the Bom Jesus area, has reached over 90% physical execution. Following an inspection by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the project is expected to be inaugurated in November. Once operational, it will have a daily capacity of approximately 518,000 cubic metres, serving roughly five million residents in Luanda and Icolo e Bengo.

The BITA project, situated on the banks of the Kwanza River in southern Luanda, aims to provide a daily treatment capacity of 250,000 cubic metres for approximately 2.5 million people. Testing for BITA is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with full operations ramping up gradually through the first quarter of that year.

Together, these initiatives aim to address the water deficits caused by rapid urban and demographic growth. The investments include the installation of hundreds of thousands of household connections and the establishment of water points in areas where piped infrastructure is currently unfeasible.
