Angola poultry sector relies on 90% imports due to production deficits

Angola faces significant challenges in its poultry sector, with approximately 90% of chicken consumed in the country being imported. Rui Santos, president of the Association of Poultry Farmers of Angola (ANAVI), stated that domestic production is currently unable to meet demand or provide sufficient raw materials for the processed meat industry, such as sausages and ham.

The shortage has been exacerbated by a government ban on importing poultry remains, including skin and breast meat, which are essential for manufacturers. Despite this, operators continue to seek external supplies due to the domestic deficit. While small and medium-sized poultry enterprises exist, they are operating below capacity due to insufficient financing and difficulties in scaling production. Although the government has introduced a financing line of 50 million kwanzas per poultry farmer, industry leaders argue that additional private capital is necessary to expand production effectively.
