Angola poultry and processed meat supply challenges

Overview

Angola’s poultry and processed meat industries are facing significant supply shortages driven by a heavy reliance on imports and domestic production deficits. Approximately 90% of the chicken consumed in the country is currently imported.

The situation has been complicated by a government ban on importing poultry remains, such as skin and breast meat, which are classified as “slaughterhouse residue” in certain international markets. This ban has directly impacted the sausage and mortadella sectors; for example, the Institute of Veterinary Services recently seized four containers of chicken skin at the Port of Luanda.

Industry leaders, including the Association of Poultry Farmers of Angola (ANAVI), note that domestic producers are unable to meet demand or provide necessary raw materials for manufacturers. While the government has introduced a financing line of 50 million kwanzas per poultry farmer, industry representatives argue that additional private capital is required to scale production and address the deficit.
